A little bit older....

Just a quick post, thanks to Will who kindly past on his scans, I am able to show off some pictures from 'Dicing With Dragons' [1982] by Ian Livingstone which came out about the same time as 'Warlock'.

This is one of those pictures that I now think, hang my trying a different pen style, for it looks too much like one of my roughs .... time tells.

Of course the originals were drawn smaller than this, and enlargement does show some real horrors on occasion. lol.

The idea here [above], besides the obvious as the chapter heading says it all, was to show the costume one would wear, created from possible modern source material, if the 'player' could.

So that's it with 'The Golden Dragon', a short post but at least a post. Thanks again Will.

    1. Talking of memories, Jonathan Green has written an article called, 'The Legacy of Firetop Mountain' in this months SFX [Fantasy Special] Magazine. Where I, among lots of others involved in the FF series, were put through a Q&A session, and, although I've not seen the article or magazine, those interested in Steve and Ian's 'creation' may like to read it.

  3. I first discovered your work in French translated thanks to Gallimard and the "Livres dont VOUS êtes le héros (The book were YOU are the hero) series, which published translation of the Fighting Fantasy and other gamebook.

I collected a good numbers of these over the years and thanks to online library and shop I now venture into collecting original edition and book that weren't translated.

Dicing With Dragons, thanks to your illustrations, is one of my favorite of these newly found book in this new path my collection have taken. Great mood, solo adventure and a fun look at the beginning of role-playing games hobby. Thanks for sharinh these, and crafting them in the first place!

    1. Thank you kindly for your fine comments. I had hoped to be in Paris over Easter for a convention [Thanks to S. and Le Grimoire] but sadly by the time I was made aware of the invitation, the trains were solid, and I had to turn it down. If you hear I'm over on the continent, and can make the time do come and say 'Hey', and if you bring your book[s] I will sign. {if that appeals}.

  4. Ooh! Excellent!
I guess I'll have to send some more scans. ;)
I really the guys with the staffs (staves?) - quintessential adventurers. There's a battered, worn, gathered together with the armour which makes it all the more believable. :)
