To end it all ...

To end it all for 2014. A quickie post with some old classic pictures from The Fiend Folio and White Dwarf Magazine.

In Old School Gamers on Face book the excellent Mick Leach has been running a post about The Fiend Folio [TSR product of the day], and I thought this an excellent opportunity to post some related images from The Fiend Folio and White Dwarf Magazine. All thanks to Andy Action-Markham and his Facebook page about my stuff called 'Russ Nicholson (Artist) Fan Page' https://www.facebook.com/groups/RussNicholsonFanPage/?fref=ts ... I could never join, for obvious reasons, but am most grateful to Andy for creating it.

So onto the pictures, first from The Fiend Folio.

This is getting a wee bit long so let's call this part one..

For those who want the sources do check out the Face book Russ Nicholson (Artist) Fan Page where Andy has gone to a lot of trouble to source the original by date and publication.

When flying ... never forget gravity.

The Storyteller
When flying, no matter the pleasure, never forget about gravity, because landing can be a tad painful.

I was about to post again just before the end of June, at least that was the plan when I decided, inadvertently to be sure, to try flying. It was great, much enjoyed for the second or so I experienced it before gravity took over and I struck the ground. Then came the hurt after lying there thinking ... I can't move. But luckily, I eventually could and at last in great distress rose from my crumpled heap position to something that resembled one of my earlier ancestors attempts to walk on hind legs.

Ok. Ok, I wasn't just flying per say; I actually tripped over a small wall with a steeper drop on the other side in the dark and as I only had my arm to cushion the fall onto hard ground it hurt a lot more than when I once fell into a house. But that's another story.

Suffice to say I'm well on the bend, even though I may have cracked a rib, but I'm fine, and that is the reason why this blog, intended for the end of June, never happened till now.

I'll try and keep any further prattle down now and just post pictures as usual. The main theme of which is related to some old mainly foreign Games Workshop related stuff.

These were done for Le Grimoire titles.
http://www.legrimoire.net/

This picture, above, was for one of the FF Advanced titles... Blacksand, but this below was, I believe, for White Dwarf/Game Workshop and because of the detail and the original size of the work I have reproduced it larger.

To conclude here are a few more picture from the past that others have posted related to Fable Lands and the Blood Sword series in the main. Shown larger than drawn size.

Next time, some work never seen [more or less [grin] before] and not too long from now. Finally a couple of pictures from the Goldhawk series by Ian Livingstone to be used in 'You are the Hero' publication I believe.

I thought, to end, a little bit of colour ... so there you have it.

Till then, thank you for looking and I do appreciate comments and questions [if I can answer them].

A Promise is a ...

I've mentioned showing some very old work from the late 70's which I thought I had lost. The originals were ...... good question, but the answer is I have no idea, and although I thought all the prints long gone destroyed, when I had a partial roof collapse, which resulted in rain damage to a lot of stuff in a back room.

However, as mentioned, two examples of my version of trying to draw a set of pictures based on "The Hobbit" survive, even if in 'poor' condition, and as I keep on saying I will show them .... Well, here they are. Sadly the picture quality is also dreadful [don't ask it's cringe making to recount], but as it may be next month before I have the opportunity to re-shoot for better quality, thought it sensible to at least give you all an 'idea' of what they look like. But don't forget to squint, lean to the left, and try for a following wind to see them better.

The first is of Gandulf.

The second picture shows the first meeting of Bilbo and Gollum.
As I've 'said' these were originally drawn back in the mid to late '70's as part of a small series of A3 prints. The runic lettering is based on Tolkien's own and can, for those who want to, be translated. As can the lettering on my 'Dwarf-Land' map [see last post].

Finally, while working in Papua New Guinea in the early '80's I picked up a couple of commissions, and here below is one such example.
The subject, if memory serves, but I'm often told it doesn't, the subject was training for the local rugby club in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province. To add explanation. In PNG rugby is played as 'touch' rugby only, This is because 'proper' rugby often resulted in torn ears and worse. I only ever witnessed one such game between our college students and an other college. It resulted in a mass pitch invasion, a riot , and we staff looking to round up our students many who had to go into hiding from the clamouring mob. Why all the fuss? Our college was winning.

Also, an end paper design from the 'latest' for Goodman Games to round up this short post.

Next some more oldies from the 1970's. Do any of you remember a very good fan magazine called 'Anduril' ?.
